The seed head of Giganthemum poppy can grow to the size of a tennis ball and they are chock full of edible poppy seeds for baking. This is an easy plant to grow, but you’ll want to give it some room in full sun, in soil that is well drained and not too fertile. Direct sow the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil, and keep the area moist until germination. They need light to germinate. The massive flower stems grow 90-120cm (36-48″) tall, topped by flowers around 10cm (4″) across. Bees love the dark blue pollen.

Papaver somniferum is an easy annual to grow. It will reseed itself in the garden if some of the pods are left on the plant to dry. Once the heads turn brown, in late autumn shake the seeds into the garden to sow the seed for strong, vigorous plants that will flower that bit earlier next year. The seeds can also be collected and dried and sown in early spring.
Sown in early spring, the plants grow quickly and the first flowers appear in early July. They grow to about 60 to 90cm (24 to 36in) tall and have thick stalks and broad lettuce like leaves. This hardy annual will readily self-seed and will make an excellent addition to any garden for years to come.
